About Dr. Rivadeneira

David E. Rivadeneira, MD, MBA, FACS, FASCRS is a board certified general surgeon and colon and rectal surgeon who has trained at world-renowned institutions, including New York Presbyterian Hospital-Cornell Medical Center and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, and the Lahey Clinic in Massachusetts. Dr. Rivadeneira provides a full range of consultative, diagnostic and therapeutic services involving surgery for patients with diseases of the small bowel, colon, rectum and anus.

Known for his advanced skills in minimally invasive surgery, Dr. Rivadeneira has a major interest in laparoscopic and other minimally invasive procedures for the treatment of colon and rectal diseases, including cancer. He is recognized as a national leader in laparoscopic colon surgery, and has extensive experience teaching laparoscopic colon surgery to surgeons throughout the United States and abroad.

Dr. Rivadeneira uses leading-edge technology, including the da Vinci robot, to provide state-of-the-art treatments to benefit patients. He is skilled at single-incision laparoscopic procedures, which offer patients the special benefits of minimally invasive surgery.

Dr. Rivadeneira’s expertise encompasses the management of colon, rectal and anal cancer, diverticulitis, familial polyposis, chronic ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, ileoanal reservoir (J-pouch), colon polyps, incontinence, prolapse, anorectal abscess, fistulas, fissures and hemorrhoids. Dr. Rivadeneira also performs colonoscopy.

Board certified in both colon and rectal surgery and general surgery, Dr. Rivadeneira received his Medical Degree from Howard University College of Medicine in 1995. For his outstanding performance as a medical student he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and selected for inclusion in Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities.

Dr. Rivadeneira completed his residency in general surgery at Weill Medical College of Cornell University, training at both New York Presbyterian Hospital-Cornell Medical Center and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Rivadeneira also spent two years in a National Institute of Health (NIH) sponsor fellowship in cancer/oncology research at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. He then went on to complete his fellowship training in colon and rectal surgery at the Lahey Clinic in 2003.

Dr. Rivadeneira is a member of the surgical faculty at Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine at Hofstra University, where he is professor of surgery. For several years, he was a member of the surgical faculty of Stony Brook University, where he attained the position of associate professor of surgery.

Currently, Dr. Rivadeneira is Director of Surgical Services as well as Director of Colorectal Surgery at Huntington Hospital in Huntington, New York. Huntington Hospital has recently been ranked by US News & World Report (2012-13) as the seventh best hospital in New York State. He also serves as Vice Chair of Surgical Strategic Initiatives for the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Eastern/Suffolk Region.

In addition, Dr. Rivadeneira provides patient care services, including surgery, at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, New York, and Plainview Hospital which are also part of the distinguished North Shore-LIJ Health System. Patients of Dr. Rivadeneira who require surgery have their operations performed by him at Huntington Hospital or at Southside Hospital.

Dr. Rivadeneira has been selected for inclusion in the Consumers’ Research Council of America Guide to America’s Top Surgeons, Super Doctors, Best Doctors, Most Compassionate Doctor, among other top doctor publications.
